What Is the VORT Test in South Australia?

The Vehicle On Road Test (VORT test) is the official driving test used in South Australia to evaluate whether a learner driver is prepared to hold a full driver’s licence. This assessment is conducted by an Authorised Examiner approved by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT). To pass, you will need to showcase 5 slow speed manoeuvres along with a general driving task, which will be performed on a designated route.

The general drive component will assess your driving skills, such as lane changing, navigating busy roads, making turns at traffic lights, handling roundabouts, and responding to stop and give-way signs. It will also evaluate your interaction with other road users and your overall system of car control, all of which are essential elements taught during driving lessons in South Australia.

VORT Test South Australia: What You Need to Know

Move off

Angle park

U-turn

3-point turn

Reverse parallel park

To pass a VORT you must demonstrate 5 slow speed manoeuvres and in combination with the general drive score a pass mark of 90% or more and not breach any road law during the drive. Any breach of road law will result in an immediate fail and the test will be terminated.

If you don’t pass the VORT test, don’t worry — your instructor will review the areas you need to improve and help you prepare for your next attempt. You can rebook another test once you’ve had time to practise and build confidence.

Yes! At SafePass Driving School, you can use your instructor’s dual-controlled vehicle for both your warm-up session and your official test. This helps you feel more comfortable and confident on the day.

It’s highly recommended to take a VORT Preparation and Warm-Up Lesson before your test. This helps refresh your driving skills, practise key manoeuvres, and get familiar with possible test routes in Adelaide.

The VORT is conducted by an Authorised Examiner who is licensed and approved by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) in South Australia.

Once you pass, your examiner will issue you a Certificate of Competency, which allows you to apply for your P1 Provisional Licence at any Service SA Centre.
